When a kundli is marked "Manglik", families often panic — and good matches are dropped for no real reason. Manglik dosha deserves attention, but it is far more common, and far more manageable, than most people think.
What is Manglik dosha?
A chart is called Manglik (also Kuja dosha) when Mars (Mangal) sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Many astrologers, especially in South India, also count the 2nd house. It is checked from the lagna, and also from the Moon and Venus.
Five common myths
Myth 1: Being Manglik is rare
Fact: with five of the twelve houses counted, about four in ten people have Mars in one of them from the lagna alone. Counting from the Moon and Venus as well, well over half of all charts show some Manglik placement. Most of these people lead happy married lives.
Myth 2: A Manglik person's spouse will suffer
Fact: Mars stands for energy, drive and temper. In the houses of marriage it can show arguments, impatience or a strong will — not a fixed misfortune. What happens depends on the full charts of both partners.
Myth 3: A Manglik can only marry a Manglik
Fact: when both charts are Manglik, the dosha is considered balanced. That is one solution, not the only one — many other placements cancel or soften the dosha (see below).
Myth 4: Kumbh vivah is the only remedy
Fact: a symbolic marriage to a pot (kumbh), a tree or an idol of Vishnu is one traditional remedy, but it is not needed by everyone. Whether any ritual is needed is decided after reading both charts.
Myth 5: The dosha ends at 28
Fact: it is often said that Mars's effects soften after the age of 28, and maturity does help. But age alone does not remove the dosha; the chart still has to be read.
When the dosha is cancelled
Classical texts describe many cancellations (dosha bhanga). Some that Umesh ji checks in every chart:
- Both partners are Manglik.
- Mars is in its own sign (Mesha, Vrishchika) or exalted (Makara).
- Jupiter aspects Mars or the house it occupies, or sits with Mars.
- A strong, well-placed 7th lord and Venus reduce its effect.
That is why a "Manglik" label on a computer print-out should never be the end of the conversation.
What really decides compatibility
Manglik dosha is one check among many. A proper kundli milan also looks at:
- the 36-guna Ashtakoota score, especially Nadi and Bhakoot;
- the 7th house and its lord in both charts, and Venus and Jupiter;
- the dashas each partner will run in the first years of marriage;
- temperament, values and family expectations — which no chart can replace.
